William Joel Smith

William Joel Smith, Jr., 81, formerly of 603 Chestnut St., died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004 at Anne Maria Nursing Center in North Augusta, SC.

Born in Abbeville, SC he was a son of the late William Joel, Sr. and Kathleen Wilkes Smith.

He was a 1946 graduate of The Citadel and was also a member of The Citadel Alumni Association. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Greenville Presbyterian Church. He retired as a special Representative with The Colonial Life Insurance Co.

Surviving are: sister, Imogene Smith Stranch of Nashville, TN.; sister-in-law, Charlotte Bannister Smith of Abbeville, SC; nephews, James Gerard Stranch of Nashville, TN., Eugene Wilkes Stranch of Winston-Salem, NC and Augustus Marshall Smith Jr. of Abbeville, SC; nieces, Nancy Kathleen Smith of Abbeville, SC, Susan Smith Bledsoe of Mayo, SC and Patricia Smith Shealy of Pomaria, SC; and eleven great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Eugene Wilkes Smith and Augustus Marshall Smith.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday March 8, 2004 at 11:00 AM from Long Cane Cemetery with the Rev. George Busch officiating.

The family is at the home of Charlotte Smith, 108 Florence St., Abbeville, SC.
