William "Smitty" Franklin Smith, 86 resident of 504 East Greenwood St. Husband of Becky Freeman Smith.
Smitty went to be with his Lord on Wednesday Feb. 28, 2018 after passing at his home with his loving family by his side.
Born in Anderson, S.C. July 24, 1931 he was a son of the late Edward Wood Smith and Montie Pearson Smith
Smitty had a servant's heart and loved to help others. He was an Abbeville City Fireman for over 55 years. He was an EMT and First Responder, volunteer at the UCMAC Food Bank, a former Reserve Officer with the Abbeville Sheriff's Department, and completed several mission projects. He served as Director and past President of the Abbeville Jaycees, past Abbeville Zoning Board Member, former Police Review Board member, and served on numerous local committees.
Smitty was a United States Air Force veteran having served over two years in Japan and the Korean Conflict. Smitty was a member of Abbeville-ARP Church where he served as a deacon. He was a former member and Elder of Abbeville Presbyterian Church. He had a great humorous wit and loved life. He was an actor in the first Little Theater Play at the Abbeville Opera House and enjoyed entertaining others and making them smile.
Smitty loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His pride and joy was his grandson, Will Smith.
Survivors include his beloved wife Becky Freeman Smith of 50 years; one son William "Frank" Franklin Smith, Jr. (Jennifer); and a grandson William "Will" Franklin Smith, III; a sister Mary Ann Tafta of Irmo, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday March 4, 2018 at 3:00 PM in Abbeville Presbyterian Church. The burial will follow in Long Cane Cemetery with Military Honors as well as full Fireman's Rites.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1:00 PM until 2:45 PM in the Telford Parlor at Abbeville Presbyterian Church. The family is at the home 504 East Greenwood St. Abbeville, SC.
