William Wallace Cox

August 25, 1920 — April 7, 2011

William Wallace Cox, 90, formerly of 119 Calhoun St., resident of the Sterling House Assisted Living facility and husband of Jane Balentine McGee Cox, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2011 at The Sterling House Assisted Living Center in Greenwood, SC.

Born in Abbeville Co. SC, he was a son of the late James Thomas Cox and Effie Mae Smith Cox.

Wallace was a United States Army veteran having earned many honors during his military career including the U.S. of America Legion of Merit Award and the Italian Military Valor Cross. He was retired from the United States Postal Service with over 34 years of service. Wallace was an active member of Main St. United Methodist Church having served on numerous committees. He was a member and past chairman of the Staff Parish Relations Committee, the Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees of the church. He was a charter member and past President of the Methodist Men of the church. He was a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. He was also a mason and member of the Clinton Masonic Lodge # 3 AFM, having been presented his 50 year membership pin.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Jane Balentine McGee Cox of the home; 1 son, Jimmy Cox and his wife, Ann, of Rock Hill, SC; 1 brother, Pat Cox, of Due West, SC; a step-daughter, Margaret Jane McGee, of Floyd, VA; 2 granddaughters, Rachael Von Ins and her husband, Chris, of Norcross, GA and Megan Simmons and her husband, Zach, of Rock Hill, SC. Wallace was twice married, first to the late Mary Elizabeth Gaillard Cox.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Main St. United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Taylor officiating. The burial will follow in Long Cane Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2:00 until 3:00 PM in the sanctuary prior to services.
