Walter "Walt" Abram Stickles

July 12, 1928 — January 22, 2011

Walter Abram Stickles, Jr., 82, resident of Greenwood, SC, husband of Carrie Lee Spradlin Gattis Stickles, passed away Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Abbeville Nursing Home. He was twice married first to the late Elinor (Sue) Klockars Stickles.

Born in Portsmouth, NH, July 12, 1928, he was the son of the late Walter Abram and Lillian Pettengill Stickles.

Walt enlisted in the Navy at age 15 and served as a Seaman First Class from 1944 to 1946 having served in WWII European/ African/ Middle East and Pacific Theaters. He enlisted in the US Army in 1947 and served in the Panama Canal Zone.

Walt joined Flexible Tubing in Guilford, CT and transferred to Abbeville, SC in 1965. He retired after 40 years as the Abbeville Middle Management Plant Superintendent. He continued as a consultant for Flexible Technologies until 1996.

Walt also enjoyed many hobbies and was an Expert Archer and an avid bow hunter. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening and was a Stock Car Racing enthusiast. Walt was also very active in Community and civic affairs having served as a member and Past President of Mended Hearts in Greenwood, SC and was also a former member of the Greenwood Lions Club, American Legion member and US Armed Guard member. He also served as a volunteer at Self Regional Medical Center. He was a member of the Greenwood Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl S. Creswell and her husband, Barry, of Abbeville, SC and a son, Van A. Stickles and his wife, Linda, of Elloree, SC; stepchildren, Vickie G. Pruitt and her husband, Mike, of Honea Path, SC, Kenneth O. Gattis of Greenwood, SC and Tony Gattis and his wife, Joyce, of Anderson, SC; grandchildren, Aaron Joseph Creswell of Greenwood, SC, Paul Abram Creswell of Simpsonville, SC, April Creswell Martin of Abbeville, SC, Amy Stickles Roland of Cameron, SC, Sharie Stickles Quattlebaum of Cameron, SC, Peter Van Stickles of Elloree, SC, Jacquelyn Pruitt of Honea Path, SC, Jennifer Pruitt of Honea Path, SC, Sharell Gattis of Anderson, SC, April Bell of Liberty, SC, Tina Bell of Anderson, SC; 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 2 grandsons, Brian Pruitt and Lonnie Gattis.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday Jan. 25, 2011 at 12:00 noon in the Chandler Chapel at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home with the Rev. Jason Wilson officiating. The burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. The family is at the home of his daughter Mr. & Mrs. Barry Creswell 39 Quail Ridge Abbeville, SC.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 12:00 noon Tuesday morning at the funeral home prior to services.
