Walter "Mokey" Franklin Able

October 8, 1941 — November 10, 2016

Walter Franklin "Mokey" Able, 75, resident of 1288 Cedar Springs Rd. passed away Thursday November 10, 2016 at his home.
Born in Abbeville, SC he was the son of Francis Scott "Sookie" Able and the late Walter Shirley Able.

Frank graduated from Abbeville High School in 1959 and earned his BA Degree in Mathematics from Erskine College Class of 1967. He was a former member of the SC National Guard. Frank worked a number of years in construction management and textiles with his first job being at Abbeville Mills. He retired from Shealey Electrical Company as a wholesaler where one of his primary accounts was Michelin Tire.

Frank was a world traveler having visited 21 foreign countries including Hawaii and Alaska. While working for Daniel Construction Company in Greenville SC, Frank had the opportunity to work in Saudi Arabia in construction management of the New Jeddah Airport, which was being established on the Red Sea at Jeddah. The airports primary purpose was to provide transportation for religious pilgrimages to the Holy City of Mecca.

He lived outside the city of Jeddah in an American, British and German compound for five years. Frank was also proud that he had the opportunity to include his three children in his world travels to many of the foreign countries. Once, the four of them flew around the world in a span of two weeks.

Personally, Frank's favorite destination was Alaska where he was accompanied by his close friend, Terry Long, of Greenville SC. The two of them stayed in a lodge several hours outside of Anchorage. They had arrangements to be picked up each morning and flown by sea plane to different river or lake destinations for fly fishing, then flown back to the lodge to enjoy the magnificent sights of the area. He also canoed whitewater and fly fished for trout in rivers in North Carolina, Georgia, West Virginia and South Carolina. For his fly fishing adventures he tied his own decorative lures (flies) which were designed to look like the insects that live in the streams.

Survivors include his Mother Frances Scott "Sookie" Able of Abbeville SC, a son Tony Able (Camille) of Decatur GA, two daughters Lisa A. Griger (Greg) of Warner Robins GA, Kelly A. Gillespie (Mark) of Decatur GA, one brother Johnny Able (Jean) of Abbeville SC, several nephews and cousins, and his best friend Jake.
