Ruth Allison Phillips

Allison Phillips, 55, passed away on Friday, May 28, 2010, in the Hospice of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Born Jan. 11, 1955, Allison was the oldest child of the late David G. 'Dode' Phillips and Ruth Stone Phillips, both of Columbia, SC. Before being diagnosed with chronic undifferentiated schizophrenia as a young adult, Allison attended Dreher High School and the University of South Carolina School of Nursing.

She coped valiantly with schizophrenia, against tragic odds, for all of her adult life, never losing her signature sense of humor.

Surviving are her grandmother, Winnie M. Phillips of Due West, SC, her sister, Isabel B. Phillips of Weston, MA, her brother, David G. Phillips of Mt. Pleasant, SC, her cousin and childhood friend, Cecile Holmes of Columbia, SC, and four nieces and nephews: Andrew Ramsey of Weston, MA, and Mary, Isabel and Gardiner Phillips of Mt. Pleasant, SC.

A graveside funeral service and burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday June 5, 2010, in Due West ARP Church Cemetery with the Rev. Roy Beckham officiating. Everyone is invited to join the family for a light lunch in the fellowship hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to: the Goose Creek Manor, 104 Marilyn Street, Goose Creek, SC; the American Cancer Society ; or NARSAD-the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression.

Dear sweet friends-You know that I did not have the pleasure of knowing Allison but I know that Allison was blessed to have all of you loving her in the way that she deserved to be loved--completely-- and that is what matters most.

Isabel and David, you and your families will be in our hearts and prayers. They've never taught us how to put hugs into words

Isabel and David, I am so sorry to hear of Allison's passing. I grew up next door to you on Crestwood. I ran into Allison many years ago while she was still in nursing school. We had a good talk about our childhood years and it was great to reconnect with her. Please know that I am thinking of you.
