Naydean Martin Baker

November 9, 1936 — March 26, 2009

Naydean Martin Baker, 72, resident of Edisto Island, SC, formerly of Abbeville, SC passed away Thursday March 26, 2009 at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, SC.

Born in Abbeville, SC she was a daughter of Geneva Martin Baker and the late Robert Lee Baker.

Naydean was very smart; chose to leave Abbeville High School after her junior year to enter The University of South Carolina. She graduated from USC in 1959 with degrees in chemistry and geology.

After graduating from USC she began a career with The United States Department of Interior in Washington, DC. While building a successful career with The Department of Interior, she also continued her education at American University where she received a Master's Degree.

She retired from the Department of Interior on medical disability.

She began her next career as a free lance and consulting geologist to international companies. This change allowed her to work mostly in the great outdoors where there was less pollution.

After retiring a second time, she moved first to the Isle of Palms and then to Edisto Island.

Naydean was a strong supporter of the University of South Carolina. She was adopted by two stray cats on Edisto Island, that she loved very much. Naydean loved her mother above all else and spent the last 3 years dedicating her life to her mother's care.

Naydean had a deep faith and commitment to her Lord and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her mother Geneva Martin Baker of the Lowman Home; a brother Richard Michael "Mickey" Baker of Irmo, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday March 29, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Chandler Chapel in Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Taylor officiating. The burial will follow in Melrose Cemetery.
