Janie "Granny" Frances Norris Sutherland

Frances Norris Sutherland, 96, resident of Abbeville Nursing Home widow of Thomas Franklin 'Tom' Sutherland passed away Monday March 10, 2008 at the nursing home.

A native of the Shady Grove Community near Belton, she was the daughter of the late Henry F. and Naomi Warnock Norris, Sr.

She was a graduate of Winthrop College, class of 1933. She began her teaching career at Bush River schools in Newberry County and also taught at Oakway School in Oconee County, prior to her marriage in 1936. She taught chemistry, biology, physics and home economics at Sharon School until it was consolidated with Abbeville High School in 1953. She began teaching earth sciences at Abbeville High School. When Wright Middle School was established, she continued teaching earth science there until her retirement. Mrs. Sutherland was affectionately known by her former students as "Granny". She was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors include 2 sons Frank Sutherland and his wife Laura of Taylors, SC and Richard Sutherland and his wife Susan of Hartwell, GA; 5 grandchildren Angela (Phil) Goddard, Christopher (Amy) Sutherland,Brian (Christine) Sutherland, Ashley (Matt) Johns, and Emily (Jason) Tone and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister Sara Norris Sharpe of Belton, SC.
She was preceded in death by 1 sister Bertie Patterson, 3 brothers Andrew, Jim Frank and Henry Norris, Jr.
Mrs. Sutherland is at the Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home where the family will recieve friends from 1:00 until 2:30 PM Wednesday afternoon prior to services.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday March 12, 2008 at 2:30 PM in the Chandler Chapel at Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home with the Rev.'s Eddie Taylor and Dan Bradley officiating. The burial will follow in Lebanon Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Building Fund PO Box 1254 Abbeville, SC or to Epworth Childrens' Home 2900 Millwood Ave., Columbia, SC 29205 or to Abbeville Nursing Home., PO Box 190, Abbeville, SC 29620.
