Howard Byron Bell

Howard Byron Bell of Abbeville passed away peacefully, Friday afternoon, July 30, 2021 surrounded by his family at Self Regional Hospital. Howard had resided in Abbeville for 10.5 years with his wife, Carol Justice Bell. He had enjoyed “small town living and especially no traffic” after having previously resided in Irmo, SC.

Howard was born April 26, 1942, to the late Byron H. Bell and Jean E. Bell in Jacksonville, FL. He graduated from R.E Lee High School in 1960 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Presbyterian College in 1964. He retired from State Farm Insurance after a long career as an auto claims adjuster having served the Orangeburg, SC, area for 18 years. He transferred to the Columbia office for his remaining time before retirement in 2004.

He was of the Presbyterian faith and a former member of Orangeburg Presbyterian where he served as an Elder and Deacon. He taught a weekly Bible Study. He was an active member of Abbeville ARP Church.

He enjoyed watching sports- especially those games in which his children and grandchildren participated. He was an exceptional gardener and grew the best green beans, corn, tomatoes, peanuts and peaches. He made Christmas very special for his children, often staying up all night working in Santa's workshop to assemble toys for Christmas morning.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Leath Justice Bell; his children, Kimberly Brooks of Irmo, SC; Michael B. Bell (Wendy) of Chapin, SC; Kameron Ethridge (Chris) of Aiken, SC; Kristine Comer of Waynesville, NC; and Kathleen Johansen (Bill) of Leawood, KS; his step-daughters Janna Davis, and Jennifer Smith (Frank) of Abbeville, SC. Brothers Dwight Bell (Rosemarie) and Dr. Timothy Bell (Karen) of Florida; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and the mother of his children, Kathryn K. Bell of Irmo.

Funeral service will be Monday, August 2, in Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 pm. With the Rev. Frank Smith officiating. The visitation will be prior to the service at 1:00-2:00 pm. Burial will follow in Long Cane Cemetery. For those unable to attend, the service will be Live Streamed on Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home Facebook page.
