George Harrison Owens

December 26, 1934 — November 1, 2025

Abbeville

George Harrison Owens, Sr., 90, widower of the late Patricia Kittell Owens, resident of George Owens Road, entered into rest Saturday, November, 1, 2025, at the Callie and John Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, SC.

Born on December 26, 1934, in Barnwell County, SC to the late Hoke Smith and Mary Odom Owens, they lived in the Healing Springs area near Blackville, SC. After leaving home, George enlisted in the United States Air Force where he met the love of his life, “Pat,” who was also in the USAF. They married in 1955, approximately one month after meeting. After his service in the Air Force, George joined the National Guard where he served over 20 years.

George and Pat returned to the Healing Springs area after their military service, and reared their family; moving to Lake Secession in Abbeville County, SC in 1974. A man of diverse talents, George worked in textiles, tool and die making, home building, land development, and for a few years was the owner of a small trucking company.

He and Pat enjoyed traveling, and visited all 50 States: driving to the lower 48 initially, and later to Alaska, via the trans-Alaskan highway. For their 50th wedding anniversary, they flew to Hawaii. George was an avid hunter and fisherman; and also enjoyed gardening, often sharing his produce with others.

He was a member of First Creek Baptist Church and also the Men’s Sunday School Class.

Surviving are his children, George Harrison Owens, Jr of Honea Path, Miriam Owens Swaney (Steve) and Nancy Owens Lowe, all of Abbeville, and Dianne Owens of Laurens; his grandchildren, Ben Owens (Kari), Jonathan Owens (Felicia), Cassie Owens, Jennifer Clinkscales, Susan Rawlings (Jonathan), Misty Branyon (Josh), Stephanie Hembree (Kevin); and 13 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his three siblings, Harold S. Owens, Lois Owens Hoover and C.E. Owens.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 7th at 2:00 PM from First Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Donnie Murdock and Rev. Jerry Dalton officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until the hour of service at the church.

Flowers are accepted and should be delivered to the funeral home at 208 S Main St. Abbeville, SC 29620.

The family request memorials be made in George’s memory to First Creek Baptist Church, 9511 Abbeville Hwy. Iva, SC 29655 or to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
