Evelyn Louise King Lomax, 68, wife of John F. Lomax, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 at McCall Hospice House.
Born in Sussex County, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Willis Alonzo and Louise Collins King.
Evelyn was a 1964 graduate of Lander College and taught school in DeKalb County, GA before marriage. Her husband's job-related moves in the utility business made it necessary for Evelyn to establish homes for her family in Tryon, NC, Mount Airy, NC, Anderson, SC, Hickory, NC, and Greenville, SC.
Activities that she particularly enjoyed volunteering for were Girl Scouts, PTA's, hospital receptionist, Art Museum docent, service organizations and the American Heart Association. She was a co-founder of the Silverfish Book Club, Greenville and was a member of Greenville Women Giving and the American History Book Club, Greenville. Evelyn was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church where she served for many years on the Worship committee and the Board of Stewards, and was a Delegate to the SC Methodist Conference.
Her interests included reading, writing, scrapbooking, gardening, hiking, tennis, dining with the tennis girls, and spending time at the family home, Lomax's Ridge in Cashiers, NC.
She was the beloved wife of 45 years to John and a beloved mother to their four children; a daughter, Vicki L. Nichols of Greenville, SC, a son, John F. Lomax, Jr. and wife, Colleen of Paradise Valley, AZ, a daughter, Leigh L. Crain and husband, James of Aiken, SC, and a son, James (Jim) W. Lomax and wife, Gretchen of Cumming, GA. Seven grandchildren will miss their "Mama Bear", Wesley and Kathleen Nichols of Greenville, Maeve, John Cole, and Frank Matthew of Paradise Valley, AZ, and Elizabeth Ann and John Crain of Aiken; also surviving is one brother, Dr. Willis A. King, Jr. and his wife, Susan of Anderson, SC and brother-in-law Nick Lomax and his wife, Sally of Abbeville, SC.
A graveside service will be 3:30pm, Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Upper Long Cane Cemetery, Due West Highway, Abbeville, SC.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Monday, January 31, 2011 at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, Greenville, with the Reverends Jerry Temple and Grover Putnam officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service in Orders Parlor at the church.
