Emily Shands Hawthorne

Emily Shands Hawthorne, 83, went to be with the Lord Monday June 30, 2014 at Hospice of the Piedmont in Greenwood, SC.

She was born in Pauline, SC to the late James Harvey Shands and Faye Brown Shands. She was the widow of James Elgin Hawthorne, Sr.

She was a graduate of Limestone College and received her Masters Degree in Education from Clemson University. She taught for many years in Abbeville and McCormick school districts.

Emily and Elgin were devoted lifelong members of Abbeville First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Loyal Workers Sunday School Class. Emily enjoyed doing for others, those close by and those throughout the world through her support of mission work. She dearly loved her family.

Survivors include two sons James E. Hawthorne, Jr. (Lisa) of Greenwood, SC and Leland Hawthorne (Grace) of Central, SC; one sister Jonelle Bradford (Randy) of Pauline, SC; three grandchildren James E. Hawthorne, III (Jodie) of Anderson, SC, Rev. Samuel L. Hawthorne of Greenwood, SC and Elizabeth Hawthorne of Central, SC; one great-grandchild Emma Elizabeth Hawthorne.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday July 2, 2014 at 2:00 PM in Abbeville First Baptist Church with Dr. Rev. John Keith and Rev. Samuel Hawthorne officiating. The burial will follow in Long Cane Cemetery. The family is at 51 Hwy. 20 Abbeville, SC.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening July 1, 2014 from 6:00 until 7:30 PM at Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home.
