Calvin Newell Bowie, 91, resident of 2 Kennedy St. husband of Mary Emma Hawthorne Bowie died Friday Dec. 4, 2009 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood, SC.
Born in Abbeville Co. SC he was a son of the late Calvin Eugene and Lucille Sharpe Bowie.
Mr. Bowie was a World War II veteran and served in both the European and South Pacific Theatres. He was retired from Monsanto and was a longtime Sunday School Teacher and faithful member of Gilgal United Methodist Church. He was also the church Historian and an active worker in Gilgal UMC Cemetery. He was a volunteer fireman, town councilman, Mayor Pro-Tem, member of the Boonesborough Historic Society and former Hejaz Shriner and a member of the Grange. He was the author of Boonesborough Township Plats, Trails and Towns, 1763 through 1775
as well as numerous genealogy books.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years Mary Emma Hawthorne Bowie of the home; His children Calvin Newell Bowie, Jr. and his wife Clementine of Selma, AL, Robert Lee Bowie and his wife Lynn of Edgefield, SC, Bonnie Marie Lowery of Due West, SC and Edward Sharpe Bowie and his wife Christine of Aiken, SC; 1 sister Martha Whaley of Due West, SC; 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Bobby and Glenn Bowie.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday Dec. 6, 2009 at 3:00 PM in Gilgal United Methodist Church with the Rev. Les Shattuck officiating. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family is at the home 2 Kennedy St. Due West, SC.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon after services in the church social hall.
In lieu of flowers memorials in memory of Mr. Bowie may be made to Gilgal United Methodist Church, Cemetery Fund, C/O Bonnie Lowery PO Box 192 Due West, SC 29639.
